เมื่อทาง #CheezeLooker ได้มีนัดพูดคุยกับทั้งคู่ผ่าน Skype จึงไม่รีรอที่จะพูดคุยเรื่องความสนใจในดนตรีของเขา รวมไปถึงเรื่องต่างๆ ช่วงยุค '80s ที่มีอิทธิพลกับพวกเขา ในช่วงเวลาที่เราคุยกันนั้น ที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาเป็นเวลา 10:00 น. ก็ถือว่าเป็น Coffee Talk ของพวกเขา ในขณะที่ประเทศไทยเป็นเวลา 01:00 น. และพวกเรากำลังจิบเครื่องดื่มอย่างอื่นอยู่...

ก่อนที่พวกคุณจะสนใจในดนตรีจาก synthesizers คุณเป็นเหมือนวัยรุ่นอื่นๆ ทั่วไปไหม ที่มีวงของตัวเอง เล่นดนตรีกับเพื่อนๆ ในโรงเรียน

KD: ผมไม่ได้เรียนอะไรจริงจังเลย เคยลองเข้าเรียนทฤษฎีดนตรี แต่ว่าก็ถูกให้ออกจากห้อง เพราะผมไม่ได้เหมาะที่จะเรียนวิชานั้น คือผมสนใจในดนตรีนะ แต่ผมเล่นเครื่องดนตรีอะไรไม่เป็นเลย อาจารย์ก็เลยไม่ได้ชอบผมซักเท่าไหร่

MS: ผมเล่น percussion สมัยเรียน ผมเกือบจะเปลี่ยนไปเล่นเชลโล่ ตอนที่เห็นว่าในโชว์ของ Nirvana Unplugged มีคนเล่นเชลโล่ด้วย แต่ก็ดีใจที่ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนไปเล่น เพราะตอนนั้นผมมีกลองชุด จนถึงตอนนี้มันก็ยังสนุกอยู่...Kyle กับผมเริ่มฟังเพลง electronic ในสมัยไฮสคูล เราสนใจเพลงที่คล้ายกัน และแชร์เพลงให้กันหลายเพลงมาก พวกเราเริ่มทำเพลงกันด้วยคอมพิวเตอร์ เนื่องจากเราก็ไม่ได้รู้เรื่องอะไร ผมน่าจะซื้อซินธ์เครื่องแรกหลังจากที่จบไฮสคูลประมาณ 1 ปี

KD: ในตอนแรกผมอัดเพลงอะไรไว้เยอะแยะไปหมด หลากหลายท่อน และจับมันใส่ตรงนั้นตรงนี้ นั่นคือวิธีการทำเพลงของผม บางครั้งก็อัดเล่นคีย์บอร์ดได้ครึ่งเพลง ก็รู้สึกว่าท่อนนี้ฟังดูดีแล้ว เหมือนเพลงจริงๆ ซักที ผมก็แค่เอามันลูป หรือไม่ก็ทำอะไรบางอย่างกับมัน แล้วมาวันหนึ่ง ผมก็ได้รู้ว่าสิ่งที่ทำอยู่มันโง่มาก เป็นวิธีที่ยาก มันคงจะง่ายกว่าถ้าแค่มีซินธ์ซักเครื่อง แล้วหลังจากที่ซื้อซินธ์ในวันหลัง ผมก็ยังไม่หยุดซื้อเลย จนตอนนี้มี synthesizer อยู่หลายเครื่องเหมือนกัน

เพลงที่พวกคุณฟังในสมัยวัยรุ่น

KD: ไม่รู้เหมือนกัน คิดว่าผมคงต้องบอกว่าเป็น Wu-Tang Clan หรือ Mos Def, Portishead ก็เป็นวงโปรดของเหมือนกัน แล้วก็อีกหลายๆ เพลงจากวิทยุช่วงนั้น อย่าง Real McCoy

MS: ตอนเด็กๆ ผมชอบเพลงนี้มาก ชื่อว่า "Unbelievable" ของ EMF แล้วก็เคยได้ยิน Guns N’ Roses จากบ้านของพวกเด็กแสบๆ ก็อึ้งไปเลย แบบ โว้ว…วง Bush ตอนนี้ก็ยังชอบอยู่นะ

KD: ใช่...ผมเคยชอบ Bush ตอนนี้ก็ยังชอบอยู่ ผมเคยได้ยินวง Korn ครั้งนึง ตอนนั้นผมแบบ "เฮ้ย! นี่มันอะไรวะเนี่ย…ดนตรีแม่งหนักที่สุดเท่าที่เคยได้ยินมา!" จะมีอยู่เพลงนึง ที่ไม่มีเนื้อร้องอะไรเลย แต่มีเสียง ว้ากๆ ของนักร้อง ผมได้ยินแล้วคิดว่า "นี่มันสุดมาก!"

MS: สมัยเรียน ผมบอกคนอื่นๆ ว่า วงโปรดของผมคือ Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark

KD: ใช่ พวกเขาเจ๋งดี ผมชอบ The Cure มาก แล้วก็ Joy Division อย่างอัลบั้ม Warsaw ประมาณนั้น Aphex Twin ก็ดังมาก Autechre ก็ด้วย พวกดนตรีแบบ IDM ค่อนข้างมีอิทธิพลกับผมมากช่วงนั้น

MS: ผมดีใจมากที่มีวง Radiohead ในช่วงที่ผมเรียนไฮสคูล

KD: อ่า...ใช่! Radiohead เป็นวงที่เบนความสนใจผมมาจากเพลงที่ได้ยินจากวิทยุตอนวัยรุ่น อย่างพวก Green Day หรือเพลงร็อคประมาณนั้น

MS: Radiohead เป็นเหมือนสถานที่ผักผ่อนที่ดี ช่วงนั้นมันมีอะไรหลายอย่างมาก เพลงเยอะไปหมด แล้วมันก็จะพวกที่ฟังยากขึ้นไปอีก โดยเฉพาะที่มีแพลทฟอร์ม Napster ออกมา

KD: โอ้วมายก็อด…จริงๆ ผมเทรดเพลงแปลกๆ กับคนอื่นๆ ตลอด

MS: ผมจำได้ว่า การทำอะไรแบบนี้ คือคุณต้องมีความพยายามเพื่อที่จะได้ฟังเพลงดีๆ และหาฟังยาก คุณต้องมีความรู้บ้าง แล้วก็ตั้งใจหามันมาฟังให้ได้

KD: ส่วนทุกวันนี้ คุณก็แค่เข้า Spotify แล้วพิมพ์ทุกอย่างลงไป ก็โชว์มาหมดละ ผมจำได้ว่า ผมเคยไปร้านขายซีดี แล้วต้องเปิดซีดีฟัง ผมต้องถามร้านว่าเปิดได้มั้ย บางครั้งเขาตอบว่าไม่ได้ ผมก็ต้องซื้อซีดีกลับบ้านไปฟัง เพื่อที่ได้รู้ว่าชอบอัลบั้มนี้มั้ย แต่แบบนั้นมันดีสำหรับศิลปินมากกว่านะ เพราะคนซื้ออัลบั้มของพวกเขาไป โดยไม่รู้ว่าจะชอบทุกเพลงในนั้นมั้ย

คาแรคเตอร์โปรดของคุณจาก Stanger Things

KD: ผมชอบ Erica จากซีซั่น 3 นะ คนที่เป็นน้องของ Lucas

MS: Erica เจ๋งจริงๆ

KD: เธอแสบดี ผมชอบมาก ตลกดี

MS: ผมอยากจะเห็นตำรวจที่ใส่แว่นมากกว่านี้นะ ไม่รู้สิ ผมชอบเด็กๆ ทุกคน เลือกไม่ได้

ถ้าให้เลือกระหว่าง 'มีพลังเดินทางไปในอดีตหรืออนาคต' กับ 'มีพลังหยุดเวลา' จะเลือกอันไหน?

KD: ผมคิดว่าผมคงจะเลือกเดินทางทะลุเวลา

MS: ไม่รู้สินะ คือถ้าเดินทางทะลุเวลาได้ ผมรู้สึกว่าผมต้องแบกรับความรับผิดชอบไว้มากมาย อย่างถ้าผมไปในอนาคต ผมก็จะมีความรู้เยอะเกินไป หรือไปได้ยินเพลงในอนาคตมา ก็เอากลับมาก้อปได้โดยที่ของจริงๆ ยังไม่มีเพลงแบบนั้น (KD: รวยได้เลยนะ) หรือถ้าให้กลับไปในอดีต ผมก็ต้องไปหยุดเหตุการณ์เลวร้ายไม่ให้เกิด แล้วช่วยโลกเอาไว้ แต่ถ้าผมแค่หยุดเวลาได้ ผมก็จะแค่ทำอะไรที่ทำอยู่ตอนนั้นต่อไปเรื่อยๆ ผมว่าผมอยากแค่จะยืดเวลา deadline งานของผมออกไปแค่นั้น เช่นผมคิดจะทำเพลง ก็ทำมันซะเลย และจะทำมันยาวๆ แบบ 24 ชั่วโมง จนกว่าจะเสร็จ คือเวลาเป็นของผมคนเดียว แล้วอีกอย่าง คุณจะ Jet Lag ตลอดเวลา ถ้าคุณเดินทางทะลุเวลาได้

สไตล์จากแฟชั่นยุค '80s ที่คุณชอบ

KD: ผมว่าสไตล์จากในซีรีส์ก็โอเคนะ แต่ผมไม่ได้มีความชอบส่วนตัวอะไรมาก ผมชอบทรงผมใหญ่ๆ ของคนยุคนั้น

MS: ผมชอบสไตล์ของ David Sylvian กับ David Bowie เสื้อผ้าของพวกเขามีอิทธิพลช่วงปลายๆ '80s มันดูญี่ปุ่นมากๆ เช่นพวกชุทสูทโอเวอร์ไซส์

KD: สไตล์ของกลุ่ม The Blitz Kids ในช่วงนั้นก็เท่ดีนะ

เพลงที่คุณจะเลือกร้องตอนอาบน้ำ ระหว่าง "Time After Time" - Cyndi Lauper และ "Africa" - TOTO?

MS: Africa

KD: ผมชอบท่อนคอรัสของเพลง Africa แต่ผมจะเลือก Cyndi Lauper ผมชอบเธอ

"The Cure" หรือ "The Smiths"

KD: The Cure สิ ไม่ต้องคิดเลย

MS: ผมก็เลือก The Cure

"Farrah Fawcett" หรือ "Winona Ryder"

KD: ผมคงจะเลือก Winona Ryder เพราะผมโตมาดูหนังเธอหลายเรื่อง ผมไม่ค่อยได้ดู Farrah Fawcett ซักเท่าไหร่

MS: ใช่ ผมก็คิดแบบเดียวกัน

เวลาคุณแสดงโชว์ คุณจะรู้ได้อย่างไรว่าคนดูกำลังเอ็นจอยกับดนตรีของคุณ

KD: เราไม่รู้ เราแค่แสดงไป และหวังว่าทุกคนจะชอบมัน เรามีฐานแฟนเพลงที่หลายหลาก บางคนมาดูโชว์เราเพราะชอบ Stranger Things บางคนมาดูเพราะชอบดนตรีจากเรื่อง แล้วก็มีบางคนที่ไม่ได้รู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับซีรีส์เลย แต่มาดูเพราะรู้ว่าโชว์เราแปลก พวกเราพยายามทำโชว์ให้เป็นแนว experimental และสร้างบรรยากาศขึ้นมา เพราะมันมีหลายอย่างที่เราคิดว่าไม่ได้อยากแค่จะเล่นดนตรีไปเฉยๆ เราก็อยากให้มันไม่น่าเบื่อสำหรับเราด้วย ผมชอบไอเดียที่ดนตรีของพวกเราไปกระตุ้นต่อมความรู้สึกของคนดู ผมอยากเห็นพ่อแม่พาลูกอายุ 12 ขวบมาดูโชว์ แล้วได้ฟังดนตรีหลอนๆ ผมว่ามันน่าจะดีสำหรับเด็ก ที่ได้รับประสบการณ์อะไรแบบนี้ในช่วงอายุเท่านี้ ฮ่าๆ ไม่แน่ใจเหมือนกัน

ถ้าเกิดว่าไม่ใช่หนัง Sci-Fi หรือ หนังระทึกขวัญ คุณอยากจะทำดนตรีให้กับหนังประเภทไหน

KD: ผมคิดว่าผมอยากทำดนตรีให้หนังดราม่านะ แบบพวก sexy drama อย่างเรื่อง Basic Instinct อะไรประมาณนี้ ผมว่ามันน่าจะสนุกดี

สุดท้ายนี้ ช่วยบอกพวกเราเกี่ยวกับโชว์ของพวกคุณในวันที่ 23 พฤศจิกายนนี้ ที่กรุงเทพฯ หน่อย เราต้องเตรียมตัวอย่างไรบ้าง มีอะไรน่าตื่นเต้นบ้าง

KD: อย่างแรกเลยก็คือ ไม่ต้องตื่นเต้น ผมคงจะบอกว่าให้เตรียมรับประสบการณ์ในบรรยากาศที่พวกเราจะสร้างขึ้นมา เตรียมพร้อมที่จะถูกดูดไปอีกโลก แล้วฟังดนตรีแปลกๆ ของเรา และไลท์ติ้งภายในก็สวยงามเช่นกัน!

Before becoming obsessed with synthesizers, were you like other teenagers who have a band at school, playing instruments?

KD: I didn't really learn anything. I did try to take Music Theory in high school but I got kicked out because I was just a brat like I didn't have any business being in that class. I was interested in music but I didn't know how to play anything, so the teacher didn't really like me.

MS: I played percussion when I was in school. I almost played cello because there was a cello on Nirvana Unplugged show but I'm really glad that I stuck with playing percussion because I had a drum kit and it’s still really fun...Kyle and I both started to listen to electronic music when we were in high school and shared a lot of music. We literally started on our computers because we didn't really know. I probably bought my first synth a year after high school.

KD: I just recorded a bunch of stuff and put it to effects and then sampled it, moved it around, tried to make music that way. Halfway played the keyboard and then recorded everything, there was a little piece that sounded okay, sounded like actual music then I just took that, looped it or did something. And then I realised that I was doing something stupid making it a hard way, it would be a lot easier if I just had a synth. So I started to get a synthesizer and haven't really stopped so now I have a bunch of them.

Music you grew up listening to?

KD: I mean I don't know, I might have to say like WU-TANG Clan or Mos Def, Portishead was also a band that I liked, also lots of things on the radio, like Real McCoy.

MS: I really liked this song when I was a kid, "Unbelievable" by EMF. I heard Guns N' Roses at the bad kid’s house, I was like "whoaaa." Still like Bush.

KD: Yes, I liked Bush and I still like Bush. I heard Korn one time and I was like "holy shit, this is the heaviest shit I've ever heard." And there's one song that they're just like making noises, they didn't say anything. I was like "Whoa, this is intense."

MS: I started telling people that Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark was my favorite band in college.

KD: Yes, they were good. I really liked The Cure a lot, and Joy Division like Warsaw and all that stuff. Aphex Twin was also really big, Autechre, you know all that IDM stuff was pretty big for me.

MS: I'm really glad like Radiohead was around when in high school.

KD: Yeah, Radiohead got me back into aside from stuff that was on the radio when I was young, like Green Day and that kinda rock.

MS: Radiohead was a great getaway band. So much stuff, so much music. And then there were stuff like way more obscure. Especially when Napster came out…

KD: Oh my god yeah, I traded with people who had all weird stuff.

MS: I remember this stuff was leading up to all the energies to listen to the stuff that was good and hard to find, you have to be like, educated and put all the work into it.

KD: And now you can just go over Spotify and type it all in man, they just come right up. I remember I used to go to the CD store and opened the CD, I had to ask them if I can open it and sometimes they said no. So I had to buy the CD and figured out if I liked it. But that was way better for the artists because people would buy their album without knowing if they like all the music.

Who is your favorite from Stranger Things?

KD: I like Erica in Season 3, Lucas's sister.

MS: Yes, she was super good.

KD: She's sassy. I like her, she's funny.

MS: I want to see more of the cop with glasses. I don't know, I love all those kids. It's hard to choose.

To be able to time travel or to stop time, which power you would choose?

KD: My answer would probably be to time travel.

MS: Man, I don't know because to time travel, I would feel like I have too much responsibility. Like if I went forward I would have too much knowledge, or I hear the music and come back and just plagiarize shit that haven't happened yet. (KD: You could be rich.) Or if I go back, I would have to stop terrible events from happening and save the planet. But if I just stop time, I could just keep doing what I'm doing. I'm kinda down to just like extend some deadlines like I'm gonna make a song and like I'm making a song right now and I'm gonna do it 24 hours until it's done. Having some me time. And you'd always get jet lag too, if you time travel.

What is the item or the style from the '80s fashion that you love?

KD: I think that the style from the show was nice but I didn't have any favorite items. I do like that people's hair was big.

MS: I really like David Sylvian and David Bowie influenced the clothing in the late '80s. It’s very Japanese influenced like big suits.

KD: The style of The Blitz Kids was also cool.

What would you sing in a shower; "Time after time" - Cyndi Lauper or "Africa" - TOTO?

MS: Africa.

KD: I like the chorus of Africa but I’m gonna go with Cyndi Lauper. I like her.

"The Cure" or "The Smiths"?

KD: The Cure, easy, I mean come on.

MS: The Cure for me too.

"Farrah Fawcett" or "Winona Ryder"?

KD: I'm gonna with Winona Ryder because I kinda grew up seeing her. Farrah Fawcett was a bit before my time.

MS: I feel the same too.

When you do live, how do you see them enjoying your music?

KD: We don't really know if the audience is enjoying our music. We just do it and hope that people like it. We have different types of fan. Some, they come to see us because they like the show and some, they like the music to the show, and maybe there's people that don't have anything to do with the show and come to see us just because it's weird. We try to do it experimental and atmospheric because there was a lot of stuff in the show that we don't want to just play, we want to keep it interesting for us. But I like the idea that our music kinda trigger people's feelings, like parents bringing their 12 years old to the show and they listen to a very scary sound. I think it's good for children to be exposed to this weird kinda stuff at an early age. Haha i don't know.

If it's not Sci-Fi or horror movies, what kind of movie that you would want to try scoring for?

KD: I think we want to do like a Drama, sexy drama like Basic Instinct. That would be pretty fun I think.

Lastly, please tell us how we should be preparing ourselves for your show in Bangkok on 23 November? Any excitement?

KD: Well, definitely don’t get excited. I would just say expect the atmospheric experience. Just be ready to zone out and listen to some weird music for a while and the lights are gonna be nice, too!
